Senior Accountant

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join a growing AEC-focused company operating within the architecture, design, and trade show/experiential space. This role will own full-cycle accounting responsibilities while also supporting more complex accounting functions, including commissions, sales tax, financial reporting, and project-based accounting.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional who can manage the day-to-day accounting operations while also understanding the bigger picture behind project financials. Experience within an AEC, construction, architecture, engineering, design, or project-based environment is highly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage full-cycle accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, reconciliations, and month-end close.

• Prepare and maintain accurate financial statements and management reports.

• Assist with project accounting, including work-in-progress (WIP), project profitability, and revenue recognition.

• Understand and apply the Percentage of Completion (POC) method for project accounting.

• Review and understand AIA billing, WIP schedules, contract values, costs-to-date, and project performance.

• Manage and/or support sales tax filings and compliance across applicable jurisdictions.

• Calculate, reconcile, and record commissions and other variable compensation.

• Perform account reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.

• Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed.

• Work closely with project managers and operational teams to ensure project financial information is accurate and up to date.

• Maintain accurate accounting records and ensure compliance with company policies and accounting standards.

• Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, controls, and reporting.

• Support year-end audit/tax preparation and provide information to external accountants as needed.

• Utilize Deltek for accounting, project financials, reporting, and related functions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

• 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with senior-level or full-cycle accounting experience.

• Strong understanding of general accounting principles and month-end close processes.

• Experience with Deltek is strongly preferred and effectively a must-have.

• Experience with project-based accounting, preferably within AEC, construction, architecture, engineering, design, or trade show/experiential environments.

• Working knowledge of Percentage of Completion, WIP, AIA billing, and project cost accounting.

• Experience with sales tax and commission accounting.

• Strong Excel skills and the ability to work with financial data and reporting.

• Strong attention to detail, organization, and analytical skills.

• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with project managers and other departments.

• Comfortable working at both the transactional/full-cycle accounting level and the higher-level financial reporting/project accounting level.
